Here's what we've been doing this week:

• We have continued to work on addition this week. We sat in the circle and I brought a container of number cards and a box of inch cubes to the rug. I put two different number cards on the rug (6 and 3) and told the children that we were going to add those two numbers. They had to figure out the answer without using the blocks. When the children had worked out the problem, they raised their hands. Most of the children were able to easily solve this problem, so I made the next one a little harder (8 + 3). Most of the children were also able to find the correct answer to this problem. It was only when I used two high numbers (8 + 7) that the problem became too hard for about half of the class. This shows that the children have been making very good progress with their math abilities over the year. During the summer, have your child continue to practice adding, especially with higher numbers. The summer is also a good time to have your child continue to label drawings and even to start making up stories to go with the drawings.
  
  
• Tuesday, June 11 is the last day of school. Class assignments for first grade will be posted outside of the school in late August. You should have received your appointment time for your conference with me next week. Conference days are next Wednesday and Thursday, June 12 and 13.
  
  
• We have been singing songs throughout the year and we finished with an especially fun song called "La Granja (the farm)". The children love it because they get to come to the front of the class and act like the animal mentioned in the song. Here are the words so that you can sing with your child:
