Español

I have included Spanish in the curriculum since the fall of 1997. We learn through stories, games, and songs. We count every day in Spanish when we look at the days on the calendar, I read stories to the class in Spanish, but the songs are a favorite with all of the children. One of the most loved is this song, a Spanish version of "The Eentsy Weentsy Spider":

La Araña Pequeñita
La Araña pequeñita
subió, subió, subió.
vino la lluvia
y se la llevó.
Salió el sol
y todo lo secó,
y la araña pequeñita
subió, subió, subió.

During the summer of 1997 I attended a three week intensive conference at Pacific University where Spanish teachers throughout the Pacific Northwest came together to learn how to teach the language better to elementary age children. Several of us put together a web page to show some of the ideas that we learned. You'll be seeing many of these ideas implemented in my classroom!

I learned more Spanish during the summer of 1998 by attending classes at the Cemanahuac Educational Community in Cuernavaca, Mexico. For four weeks of the summer of 1999, I atended the Centro Panamericano de Idiomas in Costa Rica. I have even more ideas now as to how to incorporate Spanish into the curriculum, so it should be a fun year!
